Breaking news! Shailene Woodley (The Descendents) is going to play Hazel in the film adaptation of John Green’s The Fault In Our Stars

I am very excited about this.

Here’s the thing, tumblr: Shailene Woodley loves The Fault in Our Stars. She really does, and in her audition, she just was Hazel—at least to me. You can read what Josh (the director) had to say about it in the article above, but for me her commitment to the book and deep understanding of Hazel make her the perfect choice.

at tfios live they posed for pics and said we could photoshop ourselves in and the only picture i could find was of me dressed as a crayon so i dressed hank and john as crayons to….

Hehe okay so this was a fun night. John read a bit of TFIOS and answered questions and Hank sang and then they did a ‘Question Tuesday’ segment  which resulted in Hank slapping John and Hank sang some more and then they both sang ‘500 miles’ by the Proclaimers and that was just wonderful and then the signing happened and I was so nervous but I bumped into people from my old school and we talked whilst we were waiting and they were both nervous but we were excited at the same time and I was an idiot and didn’t think to bring my Looking for Alaska so I got my notebook signed by the two of them and my ticket and obviously TFIOS but I spoke to them and thanked them for both being so inspirational to me and oh my god on the way home I was still in shock and I still am I think I cried a bit oh man so yeah I still can’t really believe it but it happened and it was much fun and I’m so glad it did happen!!!

some things you may have not known about The Fault In Our Stars

  • Augustus’ name symbolizes water. obviously, there is a lot of water in the book, it is nourishing and reviving and it symbolizes the doctors taking away the water out of Hazel’s lungs
  • the reason why Augustus always calls hazel, “Hazel Grace” is because in one point of the book Hazel tells him that she likes people with two names, so simultaneously Augustus calls her, Hazel Grace.
  • On the plane when they are watching 300, Augustus’ movie starts and ends first, and it foreshadows his death.
  • Isaac (according to John Green) was not named Isaac because his eyes are sick, ha ha ha, but because in other references, Isaac’s are old men who live to tell the tale’s of star crossed lovers and other heroic adventures.
  • In one point of the book, Gus says to Hazel “You used to call me Augustus”. Basically, Augustus is a strong name, it’s healthy and stable. Hazel, without even realizing it, starts calling him Gus, which is weaker and more unstable when he tells her of his cancer.
  • Augustus and Anne Frank have very similar coincidences. He had cancer and he underwent an operation to hopefully cure him of his cancer, only to die. And Anne Frank went into hiding with the hope of being free, but ended up dying. And it’s also not a coincidence that they made out in the Anne Frank house.

Van Houten,

I’m a good person but a shitty writer. You’re a shitty person but a good writer. We’d make a good team. I don’t want to ask you any favors, but if you have time—and from what I saw, you have plenty—I was wondering if you could write a eulogy for Hazel. I’ve got notes and everything, but if you could just make it into a coherent whole or whatever? Or even just tell me what I should say differently.

Here’s the thing about Hazel: Almost everyone is obsessed with leaving a mark upon the world. Bequeathing a legacy. Outlasting death. We all want to be remembered. I do, too. That’s what bothers me most, is being another unremembered casualty in the ancient and inglorious war against disease.

I want to leave a mark.

But Van Houten: The marks humans leave are too often scars. You build a hideous minimall or start a coup or try to become a rock star and you think, “They’ll remember me now,” but (a) they don’t remember you, and (b) all you leave behind are more scars. Your coup becomes a dictatorship. Your minimall becomes a lesion.

(Okay, maybe I’m not such a shitty writer. But I can’t pull my ideas together, Van Houten. My thoughts are stars I can’t fathom into constellations.)
